Hi,

Payel Banik, DO, here, guest on the Whole Mother Radio Show, and one of only 20 physicians in the state of Texas specializing in this type of manual medicine. With two different board certifications to practice this unique form of care, I am in the enviable position of having a private practice where I can spend a full hour with new patients each day to provide proactive holistic healthcare.

Each week, I treat many newborns and children, hearing the joys of parenthood and, more often, parents and other physicians who were unaware that otitis media treatment could be holistic. Many parents don’t know that osteopathic medicine is an evidence-based, scientific alternative to treat otitis media infections and other related ear issues.

As an Osteopathic Physician, I’ve seen the full range of children and infants who suffer from otitis media (infection of the middle ear): some were treated with osteopathy as children, some have never heard of osteopathy, and others were referred by another physician, friend, or family member. Whether they were skeptics, believers, or somewhere in between, osteopathic treatment has helped many of them recover and stay healthy.

If you are looking for an alternative to conventional acute otitis media treatment, I understand how overwhelming it can be. Many parents feel stuck, wondering if there’s a natural option to treat their child’s middle ear infection rather than resorting to tubes or overusing antibiotics.

Not too long ago, many of my patients were in the same situation. They didn’t know where to find credible holistic care, and most had no idea what osteopathy was. But they all had one thing in common — they wanted a solution that didn’t involve invasive procedures or unnecessary antibiotics. These patients were skeptical, overwhelmed by the options, and unsure of what to do next. Does this sound familiar?

The search often begins with thoughts like:

  • “I was always told that these ear complications are normal and should get better soon.”
  • “I am desperate to find a holistic alternative to avoid having my child’s E.N.T. place tubes in their ears.”
  • “My child is up all night screaming and tugging on their ear, and I want something besides antibiotics to make them feel better.”

Osteopathic medicine focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Like how Wi-Fi enables connections without being seen, our bodies have systems — like the lymphatic system — that osteopathic physicians are trained to understand and support. Just like the plumber who fixes leaky pipes, I help clear blockages around the ear, nose, and throat, allowing fluid to drain and reducing the risk of recurring infections such as infected otitis media.

Studies have shown that osteopathic treatment can be an effective adjuvant therapy for recurrent serious or acute otitis media and may reduce the need for surgery and overuse of antibiotics. By gently manipulating the bones, muscles, and nerves connected to the ear, I can help alleviate the underlying issues of otitis media in infants and children, improving their ability to fight off infected otitis media and reduce the duration of ear infections.

To better understand this, think of the ear tubes as a flat and horizontal pipe that’s prone to getting blocked and breeding bacteria. As we grow into adults, these tubes slope, reducing the chance of infection. Osteopathic treatment works like a plumber for the human body, relieving blockages and ensuring the body’s natural drainage pathways are clear.

Otitis media infection treatment with osteopathic techniques can work even if your child is skeptical. You don’t need to be a believer in osteopathy to experience its benefits — it’s all about improving the body’s natural healing process.

As a mom and an osteopathic physician, I have seen firsthand the positive results this treatment can have on children, and I’m here to help your family as well. You can check out the reviews on Facebook or Yelp, where many parents have shared their success stories after seeking holistic treatment for otitis ear infections and otitis media infection treatment.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions or would like to book an appointment for treatment otitis media. Together, we can help your child feel better and avoid invasive procedures, giving them the relief they need in a gentle and effective way.

Serous Otitis Media Treatment for Children in Houston

Most patients are effectively treated with the following measures:

  • Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a highly effective method that can be employed alongside usual medical treatments to accelerate recovery from otitis media.
  • OMT may also help reduce the need for surgery in cases of middle ear infections.
  • One significant benefit of OMT is that it enhances the body’s ability to drain the middle ear, helping to alleviate the fluid buildup commonly associated with infective otitis media.

At Osteopathic Healing Hands, we have the best ear doctors in Houston, TX who use natural treatments like OMT for ear infections. Our holistic approach helps manage the underlying causes of otitis media infection and offers long-term relief for recurrent ear issues.

Conservative treatment measures include addressing contributing factors such as upper respiratory tract infections and nasal allergies, both of which can worsen the symptoms of otitis media. Depending on the child’s age and the severity of the condition, observation and symptom management are recommended to avoid overusing antibiotics and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.

When necessary, oral antibiotics, such as a high dose of amoxicillin, are prescribed to treat otitis media infections. It’s crucial to keep the ear dry with ear plugs while bathing and to avoid swimming during recovery.

In some cases, homeopathic remedies can also be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for otitis media. Combining ear drops for external otitis media can provide added relief and support for patients suffering from ear infections.

Treatment guidelines for ear infections often recommend a high dose of amoxicillin, given orally in two divided doses, unless the patient has a penicillin allergy.

For children experiencing recurring acute otitis media, OMT offers a safe, natural alternative to prevent further infections and the need for more invasive treatments like ear tubes.

Frequently asked questions

  • Infants & Children

If my child has both plagiocephaly and torticollis, do we need a helmet and PT?

You can choose to do both. You can also choose to do neither. The helmet can reshape the head (not treat torticollis), and PT can stretch the neck muscles. However, neither the helmet nor PT addresses the root causes of plagiocephaly and torticollis. Osteopathic treatment aims to get to the bottom of why plagiocephaly and torticollis happened in the first place, without making you feel guilty or judged, and you can spend less time juggling appointments.

  • Infants & Children

What other benefits has osteopathy shown for infants?

Osteopathic treatment can help with latching difficulties/pain, colic/fussiness/gassiness, reflux/arching back, torticollis and laying in a c-shape, blocked tear ducts/goopy eyes, constipation, and sleep. Oftentimes, these challenges are related and coming from the compressive forces of delivery. Osteopathic treatment aims to free up the root causes.

  • Infants & Children

At what age do the bones fuse and it’s “too late” for treatment?

The soft spots of the head come together around 12 months old, but the bones of the head never fuse, even as an adult. A fused bone has a straight line. The sutures of the skull are jagged because there is always tiny motion, which can be seen as motion artifact on an MRI. Treatment for reshaping the head should be done during the window of time that the soft spots are open because of the degree of motion available. After 12 months, very small, incremental changes can happen up to 15-18 months old.
