Is it painful to watch your child gasp for breath? Do you feel helpless, but want to try a safer way of managing your child’s asthma or own asthma? Have you heard of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), an all-natural alternative? Studies have shown:

  • Osteopathic manipulative treatment reduces mortality and morbidity by showing significant improvement in asthma symptoms in children.
  • Improved breathing was experienced by asthma patients who received OMT.

Air in the lungs travel through small airways called bronchial tubes. When the airways are clear, air moves in and out of the lungs easily. An asthma attack constricts the airways and interferes with the normal breathing process. Asthma is a respiratory condition in which the airways of the lungs (breathing passages) narrow and swell, often in response to an allergen. This disease affects people of all ages, but usually starts in childhood.

There are individual triggers for each person. Some of the triggers include the common cold, weather changes, physical activity, and air pollutants such as smoke, dust mites, animal dander, and pollen.

Asthma can be difficult to diagnose. Your doctor will ask about the frequency of your symptoms and order some tests to rule out other conditions. A lung function test (spirometry) is done to measure the amount of air exhaled. Allergy skin testing may be helpful to identify allergens in people with asthma. In younger children the diagnosis is done based on the information provided about symptoms because lung function tests will be inaccurate before 6 years of age.

Treatment includes avoidance of triggers, proper use of inhalers and other medications deemed necessary by your physician, and OMT as an adjunct.

What is the difference between licensing and board certification for a physician, and do you have any of these?

Physicians are required to be licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. by the licensing board in each state they wish to practice.

A board certified physician has completed an additional training program in a specialty and has passed a rigorous exam to assess his or her knowledge, skills and experience to provide quality patient care in that specialty.

In my case, I am licensed to practice medicine in Texas, and I have two board certifications. The first one is Family Medicine and the second one is Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
